A month ago I sent out a "heads up" to some of my followers concerning the release of the latest issue of House of Fifty magazine online.

I recently found the time to check it out. It's a great issue. One of the articles I enjoyed the most (pg.66) was a piece on business partners, Danika Herrick and Cheryle Rhuda, co-founders of O'Verlays.

After using vintage fretwork panels on a piece for a client, the two were so impressed with the outcome that they decided to pursue a venture manufacturing their own fretwork designs.

With their online store, O'verlays, offers many patterns, varying thicknesses, and panels available in sizes of up to 4 by 8 feet. They offer custom designs as well.

I particularly love the idea of using this product to affordably update an older home.

We've all seen some version of this heavy pine bed. O'verlays takes it to a new level.

I'm the first one to say that I think that some of this trend can be "o'verdone". That being said, with a little imagination, a little O'verlays goes a long way.

Now if this had been in my history books, I might have paid more attention in class. As it is, I find myself playing catch-up to this time period and the amazing lives of these extraordinary people.

Another good read (gift) is David McCullough's tome, "John Adams".

The book was turned into a spectacular miniseries for HBO several years ago. The DVD would make an excellent gift for gentlemen or gentlewomen.

The lavish sets, locations, and costumes are worth a look, alone.

The show won 4 Golden Globes, and more Emmy awards than any other televised miniseries to date. This is completely understandable given the exceptional performances of Paul Giamatti, Laura Linney, and the supporting cast.

Right now, all the buzz is about Downton Abbey. If you like Downton, you'll love the real thing.

I've Been...Tied Up

Where has the time gone? It's been 3 months since my last post. It's not that I haven't had anything to say, ideas to share, or a plethora of pre-planned posts. I just couldn't motivate myself to do it. Maybe I needed a break, and some time to think about how I want to approach blogging in 2012, the changes I want to make, and what I hope to accomplish. So I'm dipping my toes in the shallow end, until I'm ready to cannonball into the deep. In the meantime, I've got an early case of spring fever.

Back in October, I ran a post featuring my friend Jeanne's freshly painted,

Dorothy Draper-esque front doors.

Notice the side walls of her entrance garden? They would be perfect for espaliered trees or vines.

This ancient form of gardening has been an inspiration to artisans and designers alike.

Spring really is right around the corner (8 weeks). Time to starting thinking about getting "tied up" with something.

My friends, Gary and Jeanne Beck, have just painted their front doors. A bold choice. I love it. It's too easy these days to get caught up in the "you've gotta have this", or "this is THE color right now". Personally. I enjoy taking risks and decorating for "me", and what makes me happy. Many will turn up their noses, but that's o.k......I love coming "home" every day. You should too.

One of my last projects was a nursery. The owner already knew what she wanted, so it was just a matter of finding the items and achieving her vision. It started me thinking about the modern baby room. I work with many young couples who do not have the discretionary income or desire for a room like this...

You don't have to spend a fortune on a nursery.

The key elements may already be in your home, ready for re-purposing.

You can make a big statement in a small or unusual space with a few handmade pom-poms or a couple of family treasures.

I like a gender neutral space.

It "ages up" better, and allows you the option of pulling more furniture and decor from other parts of your home, saving you money for more important baby items down the road...

I've been re-evaluating my feelings toward the color of navy blue. I might be developing a crush...

I love the way that navy can look vintage AND modern at the same time.

You can "preppy" it...

or "glam" it...

It might just be my new favorite bathroom color.

It's a neutral, without being too neutral.

It can be just as bold as any other color.

It has a masculine side...

The Long Hot Summer

Ouch!

Well, it's still in the 90's here (a much needed break from the 100's) and we have a good month (maybe more) to go.
This begs the question; How do you decorate to stay cool?
Are you the light, bright, white, airy, minimalist, or do dark, cozy rooms keep you happily refrigerated?
How do you maintain a tolerable temperature in your home without forking over your life savings to the local power company?
Most of my friends crave crisp, clean, light, and white. As far as I'm concerned, give me dark walls, a club chair, and the click, click, click of an old oscillating fan, dark wood venetian blinds (tilted up), soft lighting, a good book, and I can handle the heat.
What do you think?

Foyers set the tone of a home, but can they set the temperature?

Shelter Box

Started in England in 2000 by retired naval officer Tom Henderson, ShelterBox was conceived after he watched a BBC program on the inefficiency of most disaster relief.

Tom learned that food and medicine were taken care of by the Red Cross and Salvation Army, but when a family or group left the refugee camp or shelter, they were usually homeless for a second time.
He developed a portable, self-contained kit consisting of a shelter and basic survival tools which remain the property of the people receiving the box. The first boxes were sent to India in October, 2000.

Each bin contains
-ten person tent
-thermal blankets and insulated ground sheets
-waterproof ponchos and bin bags
-multi fuel stove that can burn anything from diesel to old paint
-cooking bins, utensils, bowls, mugs
-collapsible water containers and water purification tablets
-basic tool kit: hammer, axe, saw, pliers, hoe head, trenching shovel, rope, etc.
-small children's pack with books, crayons, etc.
*each box is tailored to the event and needs of the victims

Can You Afford This Room?

It's a diorama. A box where all the contents are fixed against the wall and viewed through a portal.

Mostly, you look, and keep on going....

You can tell when a room is not used for anything but storage.

I don't know about you, but I do not have the square footage for a room like this...

Each room in your home should be inviting, and have a purpose. You should use and enjoy every inch of it.

Multiple seating areas bring options to your room, and a sense of closeness, no matter how large the space.

"Floating" your furniture, as opposed to "railroading", takes advantage of all your floor space and instills a sense of intimacy to your seating groups while leaving wall space for storage, art, accessories, etc..

A room that is functional as well as beautiful will be well used. This is particularly important in small homes.

The room below is not a diorama, and is not very big. It's a great example of a well designed, multi-purpose, living space, regardless of what you think of the decor. It's a living room, dining room, library, and bar. Many of the pieces of furniture can be moved to redefine the space depending on need or occasion. It's a well thought out "living" space.

Just let go.....IT"S ONLY PAINT!....and the payoff for something so easy to do is big...

It's drama-rama....

You can take it to another level by putting a little "formal" on the floors.

This is where I really lose people...

Actually, the exact opposite is true. Done correctly, it lifts the eye and makes the room, even small ones, appear larger and more open.

This is my all-time favorite couple. Married for 50 years, Joanne Woodward and Paul Newman epitomized a successful marriage.

At the time of his death in 2008, the Newmans had lived in the same 18th century Connecticut farmhouse for 48 years.

Woodward believed that this helped to solidify their marriage. "We were never Hollywood people," she told the Daily News in 2001. "we just like it better here. It also probably helps that we always enjoyed each others company."

Below is a clip from "The Long Hot Summer", a film that I never tire of. I own it and watch it several times a year. Joanne and Paul were married just months after production was completed.
The electricity between them was palpable.

There are many ways to acquire art without breaking the bank. One such way is a free image website such as Vintage Printable. It's a cost friendly way to add a little spice to your decor.

A few of my favorite images...

I took this image, printed it on plain computer paper, and placed it in an old mat.

I was just working with what I had. Art supply stores, such as Michaels, offer paper and matting in a variety of colors and finishes that would give you a more polished and professional look.

You'll Make It An Offer It Can't Refuse

I've never been one to "bully" anything, but it is the dead of winter, and I'm over it.
I need spring.... now...

This weekend is the perfect time to head out into the garden and prune a few branches to "force bloom".

I plan on cutting enough branches to place in several rooms. Just about any type of container will do. You are only limited by your imagination.

The best candidates for forcing are those that are about 6 to 7 weeks out from blooming in nature.
A few options:
forsythia peach
magnolia plum
quince cherry
deutzia sweet almond
azalea purple sandcherry
apple mock orange
dogwood bradford pear

If you didn't get your degree in gardening, and are not sure what to prune, don't worry. Bare branches, creatively displayed, can be dramatic, and just as pretty...

To keep forced flowers looking fresh you can whip up a batch of homemade flower preservative:
2 tablespoons white vinegar
2 tablespoons sugar
1/2 teaspoon household chlorine bleach
Mix with 1 quart water

If interested, I have attached this 6 minute instructional video of Heather Sherwood, senior horticulturist at the Chicago Botanical Garden, explaining how to prune and force branches of several different trees and shrubs.

Now get out there and bully those boughs!!!

The Forgotten Passage

Consider the hallway...because you probably haven't.
It's not just a means to an end, but rather an opportunity to take advantage of every square inch of square footage that you have.
I can hear groaning out there right now from those of you in homes with hallways so narrow that you need a traffic light to avoid collisions.
Check out these Jack Sprats...

Dramatic lighting, color, and detail, make those narrow spaces big and bold.

Many of you are not "color" fans, or you rent, and are not allowed to paint.
Well, white can be right...run with it...

For those of you lucky enough to have the space and liberty to do as you please, a hallway makes a terrific gallery for showcasing your art work and collections.

If your living room and den shelves are overflowing, why not add a library and storage to the hall?

Attention to the floors can pay off with dramatic results.

If you are building a home, don't forget to give your atriums and hallways a little architectural oomph...

Continuing a room into a hallway is a smart way to take advantage of space you already have.

A little daring-do, and you've got yourself a chic corridor...

Remember...
Don't become so preoccupied with the destination that you forget the journey.
